Gibtelecom have donated one of their timeless red telephone booths to the University of Gibraltar, celebrating history, tradition, and British culture. On Wednesday, some of the Gibtelecom team visited the site of the booth’s new home to find out how the booth has been repurposed and to place a plaque to mark the occasion.
Fitted with new glass panels, enhanced with a fresh lick of paint, and adorned with decorative historical pictures, The University of Gibraltar have given the iconic British beacon a new lease of life. Featured at the entrance of the University, it is in prime position for students, staff, and visitors to enjoy.
Converted into a beautiful sharing library, the booth has become a place where students can go and visit, swap a book or simply soak in the history. Also available in the booth is a scannable QR code, linked to a webpage highlighting the history of the telephone booths and their cultural significance to Gibraltar.
The University of Gibraltar expressed their thanks to Gibtelecom for the ‘generous donation’, commenting: “It was a labour of love for our caretaker, Carl Alecio, who gave the booth some extra TLC in its renovation. It’s great to see its position in a safe new home.”
The Gibtelecom team said: “We are very pleased to see how the booth has been given a new purpose and can now be enjoyed by another generation. The University have done a great job renovating the box and we’re glad it has been put to such good use”.
Britain’s first telephone booth, Kiosk No 1, was introduced back in 1912. Since then, the conservative design has evolved through significant development through the years. From Kiosk 2 (K2) constructed from cast-iron to K4 incorporating a stamp machine and post box to, finally, K6 which has come to represent the standard red telephone box which we know and love today.
