Gibtelecom re-launches Sponsored Undergraduate Scheme

Gibtelecom has announced that it is re-launching its sponsored undergraduate scheme, which is now in its tenth year and aimed at university students studying a technical discipline. The Company has taken on 14 sponsored undergraduates since the Scheme’s inception, with five of these having found permanent employment with Gibtelecom on completion of their studies.

The Scheme has proved to be very successful in the past and Gibtelecom is again looking to recruit top students to study technically relevant degrees, with the offer of greater financial incentives and the prospect of employment during holidays and on graduating. The Company will therefore be holding an Open Day at its Mount Pleasant premises on Thursday 12 April 2012 between 4 and 6 pm for interested students. The event, open to students or prospective students of technology related subjects, will give potential applicants the opportunity to meet previous sponsored undergraduates and find out more about the new scheme.

In the past students who have been accepted onto the sponsored undergraduate scheme have received support from Gibtelecom, by means of a laptop computer, financial support and employment during university holidays. This year will see the scheme re-launched, providing further incentives for students pursuing relevant technical or scientific degrees. As the leading provider of telecommunications services on the Rock, Gibtelecom is looking to continue to support students who are pursuing technology related studies, and are interested in learning about the rapidly changing technological environment in which the Company operates.

When asked about the Scheme current sponsored undergraduate, Alistair Gomez, who is studying for an MEng in Electronics and Communications Engineering at the University of Kent, described his participation in the scheme as “a real hands on experience, allowing me to see what I’ve learnt at University being done in real life situations.” Alistair is expected to take up full-time employment with Gibtelecom on successful completion of his Master’s degree, working in the Wireline Department.

Gibtelecom’s HR Manager, Lesley Louise, commented on how “investing in home grown talent is becoming increasingly essential for Gibtelecom. In this fast moving and technology dependent world of telecommunications we require specific skills to meet the future communications needs of the community and it is important for Gibtelecom to ensure that as far as possible it can meet its skill requirements locally. Gibtelecom is proud to launch this innovative Scheme which aims to develop a pool of driven graduates with relevant qualifications and communications experience.”

The Company runs the Undergraduate Scheme alongside a work placement scheme (providing placement years for university students who are required to undertake a year in industry as part of their course), offering placements to university students over the summer. In addition there is the Gibtelecom Apprenticeship Scheme (where sixteen apprentices to date are benefiting from telecommunications training and a qualification from Gibtelecom, in partnership with the Government of Gibraltar).
