Local & International Directory Enquiry Announcement ends

The Gibtelecom announcement advising customers to re-dial the correct directory enquiries numbers (11811 for local enquiries and 11888 for international enquiries) will be removed on 31 January 2011. Customers dialling the old numbers (195 and 196 respectively will hear a ‘number unobtainable’ tone, as from 1 February 2011.

The directory numbers were changed in March 2010 following a decision by the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority (GRA) at the end of 2009 to introduce new directory enquiry numbering arrangements, using the 118 prefix, as is the case in other European countries. A period of parallel running was in force from March to September 2010 and as from 1 October both the 195 and 196 numbers were withdrawn, with customers then hearing a misdialling announcement from this date.

Gibtelecom Wireline Switching Manager, Stephen Perera, explained that “the number of misdialled calls has now reduced substantially and as customers have become accustomed to the new numbers, we are now in a position to remove the announcement. Consequently as from next month any customers misdialling will now hear a ‘number unobtainable’ tone when dialling 195 and 196.”

Gibtelecom’s directory enquiry services are available 24 hours a day, all year round.

Customer’s requiring further information may call Gibtelecom’s 24 hour Network Operations Centre on 20052200.
