Gibtelecom launches 4G+ on the Rock

16 February 2016 - Gibtelecom today announced the launch of its Gibtel mobile 4G+ service, with mobile broadband speeds of up to 225Mbps available. Gibtelecom invites applications for redevelopment of the Haven Building

4 June 2015 - Gibtelecom invites applications from suitably qualified building contractors who wish to be considered for the redevelopment and refurbishment of the Haven building in Gibraltar. Interested parties who wish to be considered for the shortlist of contractors to be invited to tender are required to submit evidence of qualifications and experience of projects of similar type and scale. Gibtelecom builds global presence at London event

15 January 2015 - Gibtelecom hosted a reception in the Science Museum in London last week, which attracted around 200 guests from 70 companies from the telecommunications sector around the world. Tim Bristow, the chief executive of Gibtelecom said the reception was a way for Gibtelecom to bring together its commercial partners and clients at a time when the company is stepping up its profile on the global stage and establishing the Rock as international telecommunications hub. More


Gibtelecom Buy-Back Completed

12 December 2014 - The Gibtelecom Board met yesterday to successfully complete the buy-back by HM Government of Gibraltar of Telekom Slovenije’s 50 per cent shareholding in the Company.  This follows the signing of a Share Purchase Agreement between the two parties on 17 November 2014. More

SuperSwift Fibre Broadband Arrives in Gibraltar

1 September 2014 - Gibtelecom today announced that it is rolling out fibre broadband throughout Gibraltar, with speeds of up to 100Mbps starting to be available later this year. Following an extensive and ongoing upgrade of its technical infrastructure, Gibtelecom will now commence offering increased fibre broadband download packages of up to 100Mbps, 50Mbps or 16Mbps wherever possible. The upgrade in technology is facilitating Gibtelecom reducing the cost per megabit, for example, customers currently on the 8Mbps package could see the price halved or for an extra four pounds their download speed increased six fold to 50Mbps. Gibtelecom hosts conference for 30 telecommunications companies

29 May 2014 - Gibtelecom is hosting the annual conference for telecom operators of small states at the Caleta Hotel on Thursday 29 to Friday 30 May 2014, which was preceded by a workshop on Wednesday 28 May. This is the twenty second meeting of the Teleforum and sees over 60 attendees from the telecoms industry, representing around 30 companies from 20 or more different countries, assembling in Gibraltar.  The Teleforum comprises former incumbent telecommunications companies from states which have a population of up to 2 million.  Gibtelecom plays an administrative role for this group, including managing the financials and sub-contracting the consultant who assists in organising this annual event.More

Gibtelecom statement on Easter power blackouts

22 April 2014 - Gibtelecom, responding today to media enquiries, said that it managed to maintain all its main communications systems throughout the Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA) power outages experienced on Easter Sunday and Monday. This comprises various local and international switches and networks, together with over 40 technical sites around Gibraltar, that are all dependent on electricity and for which the Company has invested in substantial back-up power facilities. More

Gibtelecom announces purchase of the Haven Building

16 January 2014 - Gibtelecom announced today that it will shortly be purchasing the Haven building at John Mackintosh Square from HM Government of Gibraltar.  The building, which until recently housed the Government’s Treasury and other public sector offices, is being acquired on a 150 years lease for £5.8 million.  More



Gibtelecom launches second round of biannual customer surveys

10 October 2013 -Gibtelecom will shortly start conducting the second of their twice yearly customer satisfaction surveys for 2013. Customers are being invited to rate the Company’s fixed, mobile and internet services, as well as rating customer service; providing comments and suggestions if they wish. Gibtelecom selects Cerillion Technologies for its new customer care and billing system

8 February 2013 - Gibtelecom, the main telecommunications provider in Gibraltar, and Cerillion Technologies, a leading provider of next generation customer management systems, today announced that they have signed a contract for the supply of a dynamic computerised management system to handle Gibtelecom’s millions of communications transactions and records. Government and Gibtelecom bring Community Chess Professional to Gibraltar

17 January 2013 - At a press conference held at the Caleta Hotel on 17 January 2013, the venue for the upcoming 11th Tradewise Gibraltar International Chess Festival, the appointment of British chess Grandmaster, Stuart Conquest, as a Gibraltar Community Chess Professional was announced. Stuart is being contracted by Gibtelecom to further advance and promote chess throughout the community, with special emphasis on encouraging the playing of chess in schools. More



Gibtelecom partners with Monaco Telecom

15 November 2012 - Gibtelecom has announced that it has recently entered into a strategic communications partnership with Monaco Telecom, part of the Cable and Wireless Communications group. The partnership marks a further step on Gibtelecom’s journey to becoming a global communications carrier. Monaco and Gibraltar are now directly connected as both places are landing stations on the Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable, and the arrangement sees Gibtelecom becoming a communications carrier of choice for Monaco Telecom. Concurrently Gibtelecom is to lease capacity from Monaco Telecom to provide it with a new communications access route to the European market. More

Gibtelecom takes action to combat spam

1 November 2012 - In order to combat spam email messages and the inconvenience they cause to customers Gibtelecom is making changes to the way emails are sent, by implementing a new authentication system on the Company’s servers. This requires Gibtelecom’s customers to make some changes to the mail clients on their computers or other devices, as explained in the emails sent to users over the summer but not yet actioned by many recipients. Gibtelecom celebrates Apprenticeship Scheme success

28 September 2012 - Gibtelecom celebrated the successful completion of the fourth year of its new communications apprenticeship programme, launched in 2008, with a graduation reception on Thursday 27 September. Eight apprentices graduated from the communications technology skills apprenticeship, and a further eight apprentices received various National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and City & Guilds certificates. Gibtelecom broadband upgrades

27 September 2012 - Gibtelecom announced that it has commenced rolling out its second set of free broadband speed upgrades, announced in February this year. The Company is well advanced in building the beginnings of a new next generation communications network for Gibraltar.  This new network will facilitate providing some of the highest internet broadband speeds available in the European market.  The new technology (VDSL2) being deployed will eventually replace the Company’s extant internet (ADSL) network. Gibtelecom partners with Vodacom South Africa

1 June 2012 - Gibtelecom has announced that it recently entered into a strategic partnership with a leading African communications company, Vodacom South Africa. Gibtelecom re-launches sponsored undergraduate scheme

10 April 2012 - Gibtelecom has announced that it is re-launching its sponsored undergraduate scheme, which is now in its tenth year and aimed at university students studying a technical discipline. The Company has taken on 14 sponsored undergraduates since the Scheme’s inception, with five of these having found permanent employment with Gibtelecom on completion of their studies. More

Gibtelecom's biggest bandwidth upgrade to date!

20 February 2012 - Gibtelecom has announced that it will be quadrupling its most used broadband speeds during 2012. The top broadband speed will almost triple from 8Mbps to 20Mbps.  These upgrades will benefit some 11,000 Gibtelecom customers. The speeds of the current Standard (1Mbps), Standard Plus (2Mbps) and Enhanced (8 Mbps) broadband packages will be increased to 4Mbps, 8Mbps and 20Mbps respectively by September 2012. As a first step Gibtelecom’s Standard and Standard Plus speeds will double in March to 2 Mbps and 4 Mbps respectively, whilst its Enhanced package customers will get a £10 reduction in their monthly rental. More

Fraudulent Emails

9 November 2011 - Gibtelecom issued a statement today warning its customers of fraudulent emails.  The Company has been made aware that emails have been received by some customers from rogue addresses, such as ‘’, giving the impression that Gibtelecom are requesting client details (usernames and passwords) to be returned to them.  Such requests are fraudulent and under no circumstances should be responded to. More 

Gibtelecom celebrates Apprenticeship Scheme success

14 September 2011 - Gibtelecom celebrated the successful completion of the third year of its communications apprenticeship programme, launched in 2008 in partnership with the Department of Employment, Labour and Industrial Relations (on behalf of the Government Gibraltar), with the award of various National Vocational Qualification certificates (NVQ) to sixteen apprentices on Wednesday 14 September 2011. The Company runs this scheme alongside its work placement, sponsored undergraduate and summer employment schemes for university students. More

Gibtelecom supports local students

23 August 2011 - Gibtelecom supports a number of student schemes, including offering placements to university students over the summer and the sponsored undergraduate scheme, which is now in its ninth year and  aimed at university undergraduates studying a scientific or technical discipline. The Company offers around 30 local university students employment over the summer break each year – with 450 placements, representing around 250 students, having worked with the Company to date. Brian Asquez retires

3 June 2011 - Gibtelecom’s Resources Director, Brian Asquez, recently retired from the Company after 39 years service. Brian has been an Operational Director since January 1992, with Gibraltar Nynex Communications Ltd (GNC) and subsequently as Director of Resources at Gibtelecom. Brian joined the Gibraltar Telephone Department (GTD) in 1972 as a Test Clerk, following two years at Cable and Wireless. When the GTD was privatised in 1990 to become GNC Brian was appointed Engineering Manager. GNC then merged with Gibtel Ltd in 2001 to form Gibtelecom Ltd. More

Gibtelecom brings new telecommunications cable to Gibraltar

23 February 2011 - Following the announcement earlier today by the Europe India Gateway (EIG) submarine cable consortium that they began to accept delivery of the first part of the EIG cable system, Gibtelecom will shortly commence activation of its portion of this new cable system. Gibtelecom, Gibraltar’s leading telecommunications provider, has been a member of the EIG consortium since the initial stages of the project in 2007. Today the EIG consortium announced that they are accepting delivery of more than 11,300km of the total 15,000km EIG cable system, and 11 of the 13 landing sites. One of the accepted cable system routes is Bude (UK) - Portugal - Gibraltar – Monaco/Marseilles – Libya, with Gibraltar being one of the EIG cable landing sites that is ready for activation. More

Local & International Directory Enquiry Announcement ends

18 January 2011 - The Gibtelecom announcement advising customers to re-dial the correct directory enquiries numbers (11811 for local enquiries and 11888 for international enquiries) will be removed on 31 January 2011. Customers dialling the old numbers (195 and 196 respectively will hear a ‘number unobtainable’ tone, as from 1 February 2011. More



Time up for 195 and 196!

29 September 2010 - Gibtelecom reminds that the old directory enquiry numbers, 195 and 196, will no longer be available, as of Friday 1 October 2010. Despite the Company’s extensive advertising campaign in the local media and on television and radio, 9 out of every 10 customers calling the directory enquiry service last week were still dialling the old numbers. As from Friday 1 October callers dialling the old numbers will hear an announcement advising them that they have misdialled and that they need to dial the new directory enquiry numbers - 11811 for local directory enquiries and 11888 for international directory enquiries. The old 195 and 196 numbers are being withdrawn at midnight on Thursday 30 September. More

Dial 118 before it's too late!

16 September 2010 - Gibtelecom reminded customers that, as of 1 October 2010, they will need to dial the new directory enquiry numbers - 11811 for local directory enquiries and 11888 for international directory enquiries. The old 195 and 196 numbers are being withdrawn the day before (30 September 2010) to coincide with the issue of the new 2010-11 Gibtelecom Gibraltar Telephone Directory. More

Gibtelecom roaming tariffs cheaper than EU roaming rates

22 July 2010 - Gibtelecom has announced that its EU roaming rates are lower than the new reduced Eurotariffs, set by the European Commission with effect from 1 July 2010. The European Commission has with effect from this month implemented the next phase of its EU wide roaming caps, which started in 2007. It has capped the price for making or receiving phone calls to EU destinations, sending SMSs and data usage whilst travelling within the European Union. The charge for outgoing calls has been reduced from €0.43 to €0.39 per minute and the price for receiving a call has been reduced from €0.19 to €0.15 per minute. More

Gibtelecom launches ninth year of undergraduate scheme

28 June 2010 - Gibtelecom last week announced the start of recruitment for their Company Undergraduate Scheme, which is now in its ninth year. The scheme is aimed at students who have recently completed their A Levels and who will be going to university to study a technical discipline in September 2010. Students who are accepted onto the Scheme receive support from Gibtelecom by means of a laptop computer, financial support and employment at the Company during university holidays. As the leading provider of telecommunications services on the Rock, Gibtelecom is looking to support students who have an interest in learning about the rapidly changing technological environment in which the Company operates. Gibtelecom receives 'Recognised for Excellence' accreditation

24 May 2010 - Gibtelecom has been awarded the 'Recognised for Excellence' accreditation from the European Foundation of Quality Management (EFQM), a first for a Gibraltar company. Following an on-site assessment and evaluation by a team of EFQM assessors, which included interviews and focus groups with a wide cross-section of employees, the company was awarded 4 star recognition under the EFQM scheme. The award, said a Gibtelecom spokesperson, "is a clear signal for our customers that the company uses the best, well-tested and universally recognised practices in the area of leadership, partnerships and business strategy. The assessors were particularly impressed with the company's strong customer focus, financial performance and management of technology, as well as the empowerment of employees". More
