Gibtelecom in the community
Gibtelecom proudly supports the local community and charities, through its involvement in many youth, sporting and cultural activities.
Working with students
Gibtelecom participates in the biannual Gibraltar Careers fair aimed at students aged between 12 and 18, at which over 50 employers are represented. The Company provides stands containing static and active displays of technical equipment, together with literature containing information on career opportunities with Gibtelecom.
The Company provides short term work experience placements for GCSE school and college students, which offer students a learning experience within a real working environment. It also offers placements over the summer break for local university students who are studying abroad, giving them the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst helping them fund their studies. University students can also apply to undertake placement years at Gibtelecom, if required by their chosen degree course.
Gibtelecom also runs a successful Sponsored Undergraduate Scheme, for students studying university courses which are relevant to the industry. These students receive an educational allowance, laptop computer and are offered employment at the Company during breaks from university.
Following the success of the inaugural Gibtelecom Apprenticeship Scheme in 2008, the Company again invested in this important training and development initiative and in September 2010 welcomed the thirdintake of 3 apprentices, bringing the total to 16 apprentices. The Company’s continued success depends on its ability to recruit and retain motivated people and in maintaining the knowledge required in such a specialised and fast moving sector. With this initiative Gibtelecom, in partnership with the Department of Education and Training, continues to contribute to enhancing the skills base of Gibraltar in the critically important areas of telecommunications and information technology.
Charities, sports and community organisations
Gibtelecom is a regular sponsor of local charities. Past sponsorship includes provision of freephone lines for Childline and Women in Need; sponsorship of swimming, boxing, basketball football and gymnastics tournaments; and sponsorship of local theatrical, dance and youth productions.
This year, the Company, together with the Ministry of Culture, also sponsored the very popular Summer Nights held every Tuesday and Thursday in Casemates Square.
